Armand's diaries witnessed his harrowing journey aboard the Ille de France in September of 1939, at the beginning of the second world war. During the next few years, the possibility of being drafted shaded the first few years of his marriage. After his status was finally resolved, Armand continued to teach and spent summers as a fire lookout in the Grand Teton National Park. He was there in 1945 when the war came to an end.
Tuesday, August 14, 7:50P.M. An hour or so ago, it was officially announced (so we were told on phone), war with Japan over. For V.E. and V.J. days to come took almost 6 years - since the August when I left Le Havre. Two day holiday proclaimed - but not at Spalding Bay, of course.
Now the peace and keeping the peace problems start...and I wonder how the losers feel? An American, especially a Northerner, can scarcely comprehend how a whole losing nation must feel apathetically waiting for the axe (however just it may be) to fall.
Saturday, August 18, 8:10 A.M. Just found out last eve that Japanese had not come to Manila for the peace terms - i.e. not officially quit, and some shooting going on. Halsey said, "If any Jap planes come overhead, shoot them down, in a friendly fashion," or words to that effect.
However, this morn I hear the envoys are on their way and that a lot of generals and high officials have committed hara-kiri.
