CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Active Flow is Precision Flow Yoga, an active flow sequenced class with continuous attention to breath. This practice has roots in both the Astanga and Iyengar practices. Students will be prompted for accurate critical alignment techniques through verbal and hands on adjustments. Some prior yoga experience is recommended but not required.
The Beginning Series is designed for those new to yoga so emphasis is given to alignment and safety while allowing students to become acquainted with their own physical strengths and challenges. Offered in a series of six weekly classes as an introduction to other classes at Kona Yoga.
Gentle Stretch is an ideal class for those who have injuries, beginning yoga late in life, or looking for a class to ease back into an active practice.
All Levels is open to anyone who wishes to do yoga. Postures are offered with adjustments and props for the beginner and those recovering from injuries, or encouragement for the advanced practitioner. You go as far as your body is willing to allow you that day.
Prenatal Yoga is designed for the pregnant beginner or advanced yogini. While pregnant women are welcome in all classes at Kona Yoga, the Prenatal class emphasizes postures and breath work for the expecting student. Attendees enjoy being with others who share a common goal and experiences.
Yoga for Women was created from a desire to blend Traditional Chinese Medicine (Krista) and yoga and anatomy (Barbara) as it applied specifically to the female body. It has since evolved into a class that focuses on a weekly topic that is introduced at the beginning of class. After a light discussion period, the asanas are chosen to illustrate and/or elucidate the topic. All Levels of yoga experience are welcome.
The Mother Sequence was earlier referred to as The Basic Sequence by its creator, Jehangir Palkhivala of Mumbai, India. Basic, because it spawned six other sequences, each with their own unique effects. It became known as the Mother Sequence as Jehangir witnessed so many people being mothered back to health and harmony and as his appreciation and devotion to The Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram blossomed. The sequence consists of sun salutes, the Five (Tibetan) Rites, two standing poses, three seated postures, four inversions and five finishing poses. It is an elegant personal practice that incorporates movement, breath and the emotions of joy and peace. (No scheduled classes to date. Practice sessions are available for those who are familiar with the sequence. Check weekly updates or subscribe to the Monday newsletter for notices).
Laughter Yoga. Hasya “Laughter” Yoga integrates the benefits of gentle yogic breathing with simulated laughter exercises for both preventive and therapeutic value. While the outcome of genuine laughter is desirable, it is not the primary goal. Laughter exercises (rapid contractions of the diaphragm) create a "happy" body chemistry by enriching the blood with oxygen, increasing lung capacity, reducing stress, boosting the immune system, lowering blood pressure, and alleviating pain. Laughter burns calories, encourages spontaneity, feels good, and is contagious. A natural anti-depressant, Laughter Yoga is a universal language; it is easy and can be practiced by most anyone regardless of age, gender, or state of health (some contra-indications do apply).
*Note: To insure that our phone does not ring during yoga classes or massage treatments, the ringer is turned off. Messages are checked periodically throughout the day. If you don't get a call back that same day, you may have called after hours or because of someone's hearing problem.

Barbara writes a weekly newsletter, Connective Issues. The main article is posted on this site by Monday evening. Other articles include Where's Armand?, tales of an incredible travelling professor, who lived a long and productive life that made it difficult for us to keep up with him. Announcements for class changes or up-coming events comprise the third article. Many people like to start their week with a little inspiration and contact with Kona and Yoga.
